More than 140 personnel from the U.S. Space Command are now stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, following a directive from former President Donald Trump to relocate from Colorado. The Department of Defense (DOD) plans for this number to grow to 200 by the end of 2026 and to 900 by fiscal year 2028, which would represent half of the command’s total staff.
The move, initially suggested in 2021 and reaffirmed after an environmental review in 2022, faced opposition from the Biden administration, which chose to retain the headquarters in Colorado in 2023 due to combat readiness concerns. Nonetheless, a DOD Inspector General report indicated potential savings of $426 million in personnel and construction costs by relocating to Alabama.
This move is accompanied by substantial infrastructure investments, with $147.5 million allocated in fiscal year 2026 for secure digital systems that will support global operations. Additionally, a total of $57 million has been earmarked for the planning and design of a permanent command and control facility, utilizing streamlined processes to expedite construction timelines.
To promote retention and mission continuity, Space Command is offering financial incentives to current civilian employees and is expanding its hiring efforts across northern Alabama to support its growing workforce.
