A trade group representing American automakers is urging Congress to permanently ban the sale of Chinese vehicles in the U.S. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation sent a letter to lawmakers, calling for a ban on the sale, import, and manufacture of Chinese connected vehicles, citing issues like unfair trade practices and intellectual property theft.
John Bozzella, the group’s president and CEO, stated that non-Chinese automakers face disadvantages due to China’s industrial policies, which threaten the U.S. automotive sector. With increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, which is exporting more affordable vehicles worldwide, Bozzella emphasized the urgency of establishing a ban to protect U.S. interests.
He pointed out that China is gaining market share globally, particularly in electric vehicles, where it is the largest market and exporter. Bozzella warned that China could collect sensitive data through these vehicles, urging lawmakers to enact this ban before adjourning this year.
