Dogwood City Comics & Games: A New Chapter in Milwaukie’s Comic Scene
Dogwood City Comics & Games is set to open in downtown Milwaukie, taking over the former Things From Another World space this fall. Founded by Alex Miller, a former U.S. Navy member who recently graduated from Portland State University, the shop aims to honor the local comic legacy fostered by Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson.
A Personal Journey
Miller’s journey into comic retail began when he met Richardson as a child, sparking a lifelong admiration for comics. After witnessing the closure of Things From Another World, the idea of opening his own store was born, culminating in a serendipitous moment with his daughter in the now-closed shop.
Community-Focused Approach
The store will not only stock popular comic genres like manga and graphic novels but will also serve as a gathering space for events like Pokémon tournaments and tabletop games. Miller is committed to making hobbies accessible. He plans to prioritize starter decks and easy-entry items, encouraging newcomers to explore their interests without hesitation.
A Meaningful Name
The name Dogwood City reflects both Miller’s attachment to Milwaukie and its historical significance. Once known as “The Dogwood City of the West,” Milwaukie was home to a notable dogwood tree that symbolized the community’s heritage.
