Donut Lab’s solid-state battery successfully clears Intertek nail safety test.

The main concern for Donut Lab is ensuring that its cell-level performance can transition effectively to industrial production.

Recent independent tests have shown that the Donut Battery achieved 409 Wh/kg in gravimetric energy density and 805 Wh/l in volumetric energy density, validated by VTT. Additionally, the testing firm Intertek has confirmed the stability of the battery’s bipolar solid-state architecture, which creates higher internal voltages and requires a solid electrolyte, ruling out traditional liquid alternatives.

In a nail penetration test, a steel nail penetrated a fully charged cell for one hour without causing thermal runaway, smoke, or fire. This demonstrates the robustness of the design.

Targeting applications in vehicles, drones, and energy storage, Donut Lab plans to scale the production of its next-generation cells to an industrial level. CEO Marko Lehtimäki highlighted that bipolar cells could significantly enhance energy density while reducing complexity and costs. CTO Ville Piippo reinforced the safety of the design, indicating that safer cells simplify the battery pack structure.
