Bishop McNamara Volleyball Dominates Kankakee in Season Opener
Bishop McNamara’s gym has been bustling with significant changes, particularly during the Fightin’ Irish’s first home match of the season. They showcased their talent by sweeping Kankakee in a commanding performance, winning the match in straight sets with scores of 25-10 and 25-12.
The All-City competition is set to continue on September 9, as Bishop McNamara prepares to host Bradley-Bourbonnais, concluding the series on September 16 at Bradley-Bourbonnais.
Key Highlights of the Match
The team’s victory relied heavily on impressive runs, notably an eight-point streak in the first set, which secured their lead. The Fightin’ Irish demonstrated a strong team effort, with standout performances from players like Maddy Weiland, Trinitee Thompson, and Jersey Slone. Their collective plays included effective stuff blocks that played a crucial role in clinching the victory.
New Coaching Philosophy
First-year coach Annie Mitchell is focusing on fostering a sense of team unity. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing the team over individual performance, aiming to create a familial atmosphere. This shift from a “Me” mentality to a “We” approach is central to her coaching strategy. In line with this philosophy, Mitchell has even decided to eliminate player statistics, diminishing individual focus in favor of team success.
Looking Ahead
The Fightin’ Irish are encouraged by their start in All-City play, especially as they gear up for a tough match against Bradley-Bourbonnais, a team known for its dominance with 13 consecutive All-City titles.
On the other side, Kankakee is dealing with its own challenges, including the loss of key players due to injuries and transfers. Coach Lauren Penrod noted the potential for growth within her young team, which consists largely of freshmen alongside two senior leaders.
Closing Thoughts
Both teams are at pivotal points in their seasons, with Bishop McNamara setting a promising tone for future matches and Kankakee focusing on rebuilding and nurturing new talent. The challenges and successes will define the trajectory of both programs as they move forward.
