WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Greenbrier Resort’s new board chairman, Lloyd Nathan, spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday, following the completion of a $500 million financing deal for the historic hotel.
Last month, Kennedy Lewis Investment Management partnered in a joint venture with U.S. Senator Jim Justice and his family business, which owns The Greenbrier. This collaboration resolved existing debts owed by the Justice family.
Justice described the lengthy process as challenging, likening it to receiving “cannonballs to the stomach.” The deal allowed Kennedy Lewis to gain 51% control of the resort and a majority on the five-member board, while Justice and his family retained 49% ownership.
The Greenbrier features a private casino, four golf courses, and a spa, and is recognized for its rich history and beauty.
Nathan expressed excitement about the future, stating, “We believe this partnership will usher The Greenbrier into a bright, new future.” He emphasized the pride West Virginians have for the resort.
Justice highlighted the importance of trust in concluding this deal and praised Kennedy Lewis as exceptional partners. He noted the approval of The Greenbrier’s casino license under the new ownership structure, alleviating concerns about job security for employees.
Nathan acknowledged ongoing inquiries about the resort’s future and indicated efforts are underway to enhance its potential, affirming that substantial planning and strategy will develop in the coming months.
