Four Chinese academics have been officially investigated for research misconduct after being flagged by a prominent blogger. The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) revealed this on August 26, part of a broader announcement involving 31 misconduct cases affecting over 40 researchers—its largest disclosure to date.
These four scholars, notable recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, faced severe consequences. Three had held leadership positions as deans or associate deans. Following revelations by the blogger, the NSFC not only revoked their funding and titles but also demanded the return of over 10 million yuan (around US$1.5 million) in grants. They are now barred from reapplying for funding for three to seven years.
