The Science and Statistics of Our Autumn-like Weather | NevadaWX 2Go

Northern Nevada Weather Update

As of September, Northern Nevada is experiencing fall-like temperatures with highs in the 70s. Unlike other regions, such as the Plains and East Coast, which are still experiencing warmer conditions, Northern Nevada is under the influence of a trough in the jet stream, resulting in about fifteen degrees below average temperatures for this time of year.

Jet Stream Dynamics

The jet stream acts somewhat like a jump rope, with alternating ridges and troughs. Currently, a trough is positioned over the West Coast, bringing cooler air and cloudy, windy conditions. This trough will linger and is expected to deepen, potentially extending rain chances into northern California and Washoe County by Thursday. Although Reno might see a few sprinkles by Friday, the chances remain low.

Temperature Records

While records for extreme heat are often highlighted, there are also records for cold temperatures. However, no records are expected to be broken during this stretch of cooler weather. To break records, temperatures would need to dip into the 60s, but current readings are around fifteen degrees lower than average for September.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

Between September 1st and September 10th, Reno averages one day at or below 75 degrees, with a record of seven days. As we approach the weekend, temperatures are projected to climb back into the upper 70s. The average high for Reno will decrease to 78 degrees by September 30th and drop further to 76 degrees by October 3rd. By Halloween, the average high temperature is typically around 64 degrees, reflecting the transitional nature of fall where both warm and cold days can occur.

Summary

In summary, Northern Nevada is currently experiencing unseasonably cool temperatures, with weather patterns expected to shift as fall progresses. While pleasant for some, it indicates a shift as summer gives way to autumn.
