Closure of Cape Girardeau Coffee Shop Sheds Light on Challenges Faced by Small Businesses

The article reports on the closure of all four locations of The Ground-a-Bout in Cape Girardeau, including its downtown café, as announced by the owner on social media. The owner cited a challenging economic environment for small businesses as the reason for closing.

Local business owners expressed concern over this trend, noting a decrease in foot traffic in the area. Karla Cornelius, who owns El Kolibri Coffee and Curiosities, mentioned that half of her customers come from out of town, highlighting the lack of local support despite being near Southeast Missouri State University. She also pointed out how business fluctuates according to the university’s academic calendar.

Laurie Ray, owner of Annie Lauries, also noted a drop in foot traffic upon students’ return to town. She emphasized the importance of community support for business sustainability.

Despite these challenges, Cornelius remains optimistic about the future of downtown Cape Girardeau, reflecting on past improvements and the potential for continued growth. Additionally, another local business, The Juicery on Cape La Croix, announced it would transition to a pop-up operation.
