Ukraine is intensifying its support for artists amid the ongoing threat to its cultural heritage due to the war with Russia. The “Tysiachovesna” (1,000 Springs) initiative, proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, allocates Hr 4 billion ($76.7 million) from the state budget to fund the creation of 1,000 hours of Ukrainian-language content. Launched by the Culture Ministry, the initiative encourages diverse artistic proposals, encompassing topics like history, folklore, and wartime experiences.
Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna highlights the initiative’s importance for national culture, framing it as a crucial economic sector. The project’s recent evaluation process has drawn both interest and criticism, particularly around its application criteria and the judging system’s potential conflicts of interest. Despite setbacks, 92 projects were approved in film categories alone, alongside selections in music and visual arts.
Reflections on the inaugural round indicate a shared desire for improvements, especially regarding promotion and distribution strategies. Discussions are underway to enhance future iterations, ensuring a lasting cultural impact in Ukraine. The initiative aims to not only bolster national pride but also diminish the influence of Russian-language media.
