The recent discovery of a dinosaur named Musango matusadonaensis in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, highlights the region’s rich paleontological potential. Scientists conducted extensive excavations in a wildlife-rich environment, facing significant risks from crocodiles and hippos while searching for bones that ultimately spanned 4.5 meters and weighed 222 kilograms.
Despite the lack of a skull, researchers have inferred possible dietary habits based on the bones found. The name “Musango,” which means “living in the bush” in the local Shona language, honors the area’s natural beauty and the wildlife guide who assisted during the expedition.
This dinosaur represents a notable addition to the small list of prehistoric species identified in Zimbabwe. The team aims to continue exploring the region to uncover more about the dinosaurs that roamed Southern Africa during the Triassic and Jurassic periods.
Factors such as the remoteness of potential study sites and historical conflicts have contributed to the continent’s underrepresentation in paleontology.
