The annual All Are Welcome reception took place on Aug. 29 in the Red Cloud Room at the Cather Dining Center, fostering community among students and faculty from diverse backgrounds. Attendees enjoyed a buffet and explored stands from 17 different student organizations and community partners, including the Afrikan People’s Union and Students For Justice in Palestine.
Communications specialist Parviz Jamalov opened the event, emphasizing the importance of connection and belonging, ensuring attendees know they aren’t alone. Guest speakers such as Dee Dee Anderson, vice chancellor of Student Life, highlighted the significance of building relationships and a supportive community.
Other speakers included Miguel Baeza Aguilera, who discussed various Greek councils, and social media influencer Keenan Serrano, who encouraged attendees to create their own visions. Brian Cordell of the International Student Fellowship spoke about helping international students connect with others in Lincoln and Nebraska.
Following the speeches, social activities encouraged attendees to interact, including a shape identification exercise and a game of human bingo. New attendees received ceremonial pins symbolizing pride, connection, and cultural richness. The event concluded with closing remarks from Kenji Madison and TJ McDowell, welcoming everyone to the new school year at UNL.
