Bend, Oregon: Top Labor Day Destination Despite Rising Gas Prices
Bend and Central Oregon are once again the preferred choice for travelers this Labor Day Weekend, even with average gas prices in Oregon reaching a record high of $4.89 per gallon. This marks the highest price seen during the holiday, surpassing last year’s high of $4.74.
Despite the financial pinch, many locals have made their plans. RJ Petershagen shared that he will be heading to Pacific City for the weekend, acknowledging the cost of gas but expressing that it won’t deter their plans significantly. Others, like Ron Bessling, prefer to stay in the area, appreciating all that Central Oregon has to offer.
AAA has reported that Bend ranks as the top regional destination for the holiday, with Redmond close behind at 10th. Marie Dodds, AAA’s Government and Public Affairs Director, noted that heavy traffic is expected as visitors flock to Bend.
The influx of tourists greatly benefits the local economy, particularly in the hospitality sector. Tim Neville from Visit Bend highlighted that Labor Day typically sees a surge in hotel demand, surpassing the five-year average by 5.8% last year. The transient lodging tax collected from hotel stays is reinvested into the community, supporting local initiatives such as trail maintenance and environmental efforts.
As crowds gather and the economic impact grows, Bend continues to establish itself as a seasonally loved destination.
