Texas A&M University System is vying for a contract to manage NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), renowned for its role in robotic space exploration. A&M and JPL have collaborated since 2019, allowing students and researchers from both institutions to work together.
JPL manages crucial missions, including Mars rovers and solar system explorations, while Texas A&M is enhancing its space initiatives, showcased by the development of the A&M Space Institute at Johnson Space Center. The university system also has experience managing significant operations, such as Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Pantex Plant.
Chancellor Glenn Hegar emphasized A&M’s qualifications in space, engineering, and national security, citing the system’s potential to be a strong competitor for the JPL contract, pending Board of Regents approval. Proposals were due to NASA on August 24, and the Board will discuss the proposal during meetings from September 2 to 4.
