California scientists are embarking on a groundbreaking project to develop “smart” blood cells aimed at boosting soldiers’ endurance and performance. Funded by over $11 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), this initiative seeks to engineer red blood cells that can enhance oxygen delivery during intense physical activity.
The project aligns with the military’s growing emphasis on health and performance, as evidenced by recent fitness campaigns. Researchers at UC San Diego will collaborate with other leading institutions like Northeastern University, the University of Pennsylvania, and MIT.
Utilizing gene-editing techniques, scientists aim to create blood cells that can detect physical exertion and respond accordingly. While this research is primarily focused on military applications, its potential could extend to improving athletic performance and treating various medical conditions related to insufficient oxygen supply, such as heart attacks and strokes.
