First Dedicated Interstellar Mission: Fermi Explorer Mission
The Fermi Explorer Mission, a nonprofit venture, aims to launch a probe toward Alpha Centauri by 2029, marking the first dedicated mission to another star. However, the spacecraft’s journey is projected to take around 80,000 years, meaning no one will witness its arrival.
Mission Objectives
Philip Johnston, co-founder of the mission, expressed the ambition behind the endeavor: “We hope to be both the first to leave and the last to arrive at Alpha Centauri.” The mission seeks to inspire future generations by taking initial steps toward interstellar travel.
Team and Guidance
The mission is led by a group of experienced individuals, including former U.S. Air Force officer Garrett Jamison. Advisors comprise notable figures in the spaceflight sector, such as Rob Meyerson of Blue Origin and Matt Gialich of AstroForge.
Technical Aspects
The planned spacecraft will weigh between 220 to 440 pounds (100 to 200 kg) and carry about 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of payload. It is designed to utilize electric propulsion, a method more efficient than traditional thrusters. The entire mission budget is estimated to be less than $15 million.
Fermi Paradox Connection
The mission aims to shed light on the Fermi Paradox, which questions why, despite the vastness of the universe and the prevalence of exoplanets, we have not yet found evidence of extraterrestrial life. The team proposes three possible explanations for this paradox:
- Human-like intelligence is rare in the universe.
- Intelligent species do not last long.
- Intelligent alien civilizations might choose not to reveal themselves.
Although launching this mission won’t directly solve the Fermi Paradox, it aims to gather data, potentially enhancing our understanding of interstellar travel and its feasibility.
