The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the U.S., will permanently close its museum on September 30, 2026. Despite its rich history dating back to 1812 and its affiliation with Drexel University since 2011, ongoing challenges such as rising operating costs, reduced visitation, and funding cuts have led to this difficult decision.
Drexel University President Antonio Merlo, PhD, and Board of Trustees Chair Suzanne Biemiller emphasized the commitment to public engagement and education, stating efforts will continue to find sustainable ways to display and engage with its vast collection of over 19 million specimens and resources.
The closure is viewed as a necessary step towards building a sustainable future for the Academy, which has a heritage of advancing scientific discovery. Scott Cooper, PhD, has resigned as the Academy’s president and CEO but will assist during the transition.
