Mayor’s Update | A Long-Term Commitment to Downtown Santa Cruz

Mayor’s Message: A Growing and Thriving Downtown Santa Cruz

As we continue to invest in our city’s future, I’m excited to share some updates about the ongoing developments in downtown Santa Cruz. Over the past four years, we’ve seen significant improvements in infrastructure, housing, public spaces, and businesses, enhancing our community’s experience.

Progress and Investment

This year marks a continuation of our commitment to these investments. Essential infrastructure work is currently underway on Cedar, Center, and soon Front streets. We’ve welcomed twelve new businesses, including Anthropologie, and are celebrating the opening of 128 affordable homes at Pacific Station North. The Downtown Library and Affordable Housing Project, which will add 124 more affordable units along with a state-of-the-art library and community amenities, is also progressing.

Encouraging Economic Indicators

The numbers tell a positive story: downtown sales tax revenue has increased year-over-year in three of the last four quarters, with a notable 7.5% rise in the first quarter of 2026, surpassing the citywide growth of 2.9%. Foot traffic is on the rise, with twenty-three new businesses added in the last year and a half, while vacancies along Pacific Avenue have decreased significantly.

Housing and Community

The new housing developments are not just about numbers; they create opportunities for residents and local workers, enabling them to live close to where they work and raise families. This is about building a community where the next generation can thrive, much like their parents before them.

Community Safety and Accessibility

Ongoing upgrades to storm drain infrastructures and curb enhancements on Cedar and Center streets aim to mitigate flooding issues while boosting pedestrian safety. These improvements contribute to our vision of a vibrant and accessible downtown that serves our community well into the future.

Looking Ahead

Though we’ve made great strides, there’s still work to be done. We must continue to foster local businesses, attract new ones to vacant storefronts, and create a clean, safe environment for all. This collective effort relies on the engagement and investment of our community.

In conclusion, the progress we witness today stems from collaborative efforts—combining public policies, private investments, and community support. Together, we can ensure that the momentum continues. I look forward to engaging with you in our downtown as we work together toward a brighter future.
