Optimizing Health: The Rise of Supplements Among Hongkongers for Maintaining Vitality

In the first part of a five-part wellness series about trends in Hong Kong, Lo Hoi-ying explores why younger residents are increasingly opting for supplements to enhance energy, immunity, and performance. Experts caution that relying heavily on supplements may not be a substitute for a balanced diet.

Tata Tse Yi-kwan, a sound-wellness practitioner preparing for a Hyrox race, spends around HK$2,000 (US$255) each month on personalized supplements, which include MCT oil, collagen, multivitamins, creatine, and enzymes. She combines these with wellness practices like meditation and journaling, describing her regimen as essential to keeping her “engine” running.

This trend reflects a broader movement among millennials and Gen Z in Hong Kong, mirroring the immense US$2 trillion global wellness industry. With rising health awareness, an aging population, and a recovery in tourism, the local wellness market is projected to reach HK$12.7 billion in retail sales by 2028, according to an analysis by Frost & Sullivan.
