At 25 years old, Benton is coming off a standout season, achieving career highs with 51 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks, contributing to the Steelers’ AFC North title. Coach Mike McCarthy praised Benton’s athleticism and potential for further growth, noting the respect he has garnered from teammates, exemplified by a standing ovation during a recent team meeting.
This agreement solidifies Benton as a key player on the defense, especially as the team anticipates the eventual retirement of veteran defensive captain Cam Heyward, who is under contract until 2027. The Steelers have also invested heavily in their defensive line over recent drafts.
Benton is the latest member of the 2023 draft class to secure a new contract, joining teammates Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington. However, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. remains in limbo as he enters the final year of his rookie deal and is currently on the physically unable to perform list due to a back issue.
