Affluent Hong Kong Residents Favor Travel over Property: A Shift in Lifestyle Aspirations

The recent study reveals a notable shift among affluent Hong Kong residents in how they prioritize investments. Real estate, traditionally valued, is now overshadowed by the allure of travel.

### Travel as a Form of Investment

According to the findings, almost 50% of wealthy respondents prioritize immersive travel experiences, ranking it just behind early retirement as a life goal. The survey, which included 1,058 individuals aged 30 and above with at least HKD1 million in investable assets, highlighted that many high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) view travel not merely as leisure but as a crucial investment in their personal enrichment and long-term well-being. Nearly 75% of HNWIs expressed this viewpoint.

Interestingly, wealthy parents perceive overseas travel as a vital part of their children’s education, valuing it more than traditional tutoring or extracurricular activities.

### The Waning Influence of Real Estate

Historically, real estate has played a significant role in Hong Kong’s economy, accounting for over 30% of the city’s GDP in the early 21st century. However, this influence has decreased, with contributions dropping to approximately 21% in 2021.

In contrast, as residents increasingly focus on travel, their spending in this area is also rising. HNWIs plan to spend an average of HKD345,000 on travel this year, significantly more than other respondents and indicative of a broader trend. Moreover, two-thirds of HNWIs noted their travel spending surpasses daily living expenses, reflecting a pronounced emphasis on experiences over material investments.
