Department of Energy Unveils Multi-Billion Dollar Investment in McCracken County | News

Major Investment Announced for Paducah Site

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. — The Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled plans to transform parts of the Paducah Site into a data center, with an investment surpassing $100 billion, as announced on Wednesday.

Project Overview

The DOE will collaborate with Brookfield, NextEra Energy, Big Rivers Electric Power Corporation, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative, and Paducah Power System to bring this project to fruition by 2031. Expected outcomes include the creation of approximately 8,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent positions. The initiative aims to enhance affordable energy infrastructure in the region.

Energy Goals

In alignment with President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, the project is designed to generate energy exceeding the campus’s needs, allowing surplus electricity to contribute to the regional grid, thereby reducing energy expenses for families and businesses. Key components include:

  • 2.1 gigawatts of new natural gas-fired generation.
  • Upgrades to existing transmission systems.
  • Deployment of up to 2.6 gigawatts of battery storage to support a new 1.8 gigawatt AI and high-performance computing campus.

Economic Impact

This initiative is part of the DOE’s American Energy Hubs strategy, leveraging federal resources to boost energy affordability and innovation. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright emphasized the project as a means to harness federal lands for power generation, job creation, and to support the U.S. in the race for AI advancements.

Rep. Andy Barr called the investment “historic” for Paducah, expressing gratitude for the federal commitment and highlighting local and state support in advocating for this development.

Community Concerns

However, state Governor Andy Beshear has not yet received briefings from involved entities and has expressed various concerns regarding the project’s impact on power, the environment, job creation, and local tax contributions.

This transformative project positions the Paducah Site as a key player in supporting large-scale AI infrastructure while revitalizing the local economy.
