Research Underway on UConn-Developed Protein Supplement: Its Purpose Explained.

The UConn School of Medicine is conducting a six-month study on an amino-acid supplement shake aimed at Parkinson’s patients to assess its effects on health, inflammation, and metabolism. They’re seeking participants aged 60 to 80 to consume the shake daily and provide blood samples alongside functional assessments.

Jose Figueroa, a patient and participant, has seen improvements in his health and mobility since starting regular exercise and nutritional support. Dr. Jacob Earp and Dr. Cristina Colón-Semenza are leading the research, focusing on tailored nutrition to meet the specific needs of those with Parkinson’s, especially regarding protein consumption and medication absorption.

The study, which aims to recruit 24 participants, compares the UConn shake to over-the-counter options. Figueroa noted significant energy boosts during his involvement, stating he can now engage more actively with family, particularly with his grandchildren. Researchers emphasize the importance of supporting protein needs without hindering essential medication. Interested individuals can contact Carlos Rehbein for more information about participation.
