GSK Plans £400 Million Investment in UK Over Three Years to Boost R&D Initiatives | WTVB | 1590 AM · 95.5 FM

GSK, the British drugmaker, announced plans to invest £400 million ($531 million) over three years, moving its R&D operations to Cambridge to accelerate the development of new medicines under the leadership of CEO Luke Miels.

This investment follows a recent agreement between the U.S. and Britain to align UK medicine prices with U.S. standards. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the move as a vote of confidence in the UK business landscape, enhancing homegrown innovation.

The investment is part of a broader government initiative, the Life Sciences Sector Plan, which aims to position the UK among the top three life sciences economies by 2035. Earlier this year, competitor AstraZeneca also announced a £300 million investment in the UK.

GSK’s new location in Cambridge will span 300,000 square feet and focus on areas such as cancer and respiratory diseases, hosting over 1,000 scientists. The company will vacate its Stevenage R&D site by 2029 and upgrade its facility in Ware. GSK invests more than £6 billion in R&D annually, with over £1.5 billion allocated to the UK.
