Discovery of New Avocado Species in Nicaragua

Scientists exploring Nicaragua’s rainforests have uncovered a rich variety of avocado species. This research, led by archaeobotanist Kevin Wann from Texas A&M University, highlights the genetic diversity of avocados that stems from ancient migrations approximately 5,000 years ago, when the fruit was brought from South America to Central America.

Importance of Genetic Diversity

The findings suggest that this diversity could enhance sustainable agriculture and diversify commercial avocado varieties, vital for the billion-dollar avocado industry. Currently, most avocados sold are genetically identical Hass varieties, which makes them susceptible to diseases and environmental changes. Increasing genetic diversity is critical to protecting these crops.

Research Methodology

Wann and his team analyzed DNA from avocado leaves collected from Nicaragua, Honduras, and southern Mexico, alongside discussions with local farmers regarding the cultivation of indigenous avocado variants. Their research revealed that many local varieties were genetically linked to populations in South America.

Traditional agricultural practices have maintained these native avocado landraces, which have shown resilience against diseases like root rot, commonly affecting commercial avocados.

Future Implications

The research points to the potential for these native varieties to withstand climate change and diseases better than their commercially grown counterparts. As global agronomists seek ways to improve crop resilience, the findings on avocado diversity could serve as a model for enhancing other crops, ensuring food security against evolving environmental challenges.

By tapping into this genetic diversity, researchers hope to protect the avocado industry from threats that have previously ravaged other monoculture crops, such as bananas.
