Multnomah County Commissioners to Vote on Moda Center Renovation Funding
Multnomah County is preparing to vote on a resolution to affirm its financial commitment to the renovation of Moda Center, home of the Portland Trail Blazers. The proposed funding framework includes:
- State Contribution: Up to $365 million.
- City Investment: Portland Mayor Keith Wilson suggests contributing $120 million.
- County Proposal: Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson proposes $88 million, while Commissioners Julia Brim-Edwards and Meghan Moyer advocate for a lower amount of $53 million.
The state requires a “substantial” financial commitment from both the city and county to secure its funds, although the definition of “substantial” remains unclear.
Commissioner Moyer argues that the $88 million investment is excessive given the county’s projected $60 million budget shortfall over the next three years, citing the importance of allocating funds to core county services.
Concerns have been raised regarding the return on investment for the county and potential negative effects if the renovations do not proceed. Commissioner Shannon Singleton highlighted the impact on her district and proposed amendments to protect the county’s interests if the team leaves before the lease ends.
The vote on Thursday will mark a preliminary commitment, with final decisions expected later this year.
