Quit Corporate Job to Travel Full-Time as a House and Pet Sitter

House-Sitting: A Journey of Freedom and Connection

A New Beginning

A few years back, I found myself ensconced in a traditional 9-to-5 corporate management job in the San Francisco Bay Area. After almost a decade of hard work, I had the typical markers of success: a car, a home, and emergency savings—all without debts looming over me.

Yet, despite this external success, I felt a persistent sense of dissatisfaction.

The Leap into Adventure

In 2022, I made a significant decision: I left my stable job, hopped on a one-way flight to Italy, and embraced a life of full-time travel. What started as a break morphed into over two years of exploring new countries, entirely supported by my savings.

Throughout this journey, a recurring thought nagged at me: “When will I tire of this constantly moving lifestyle, and how can I make it last longer?”

Discovering House-Sitting

In my quest for a more sustainable way to travel, I stumbled upon house-sitting. This arrangement allows me to look after someone’s home while they’re away, often including the company of their pets. In return, I get free accommodation, and sometimes, I even get paid.

This trade-off was an enticing prospect; it would help me save money typically spent on hotels or rentals.

Expanding Horizons

Once I dove into house-sitting, my network grew exponentially as I traveled. What surprised me was the high demand for house-sitters, not just in the U.S. but globally. I’ve had the privilege of watching over homes and pets in over 15 cities, including breathtaking beachfronts in Honolulu, the culinary delights of Santa Fe, and the vibrant cafés of Brooklyn.

Living with Freedom and Connection

The biggest expense for many people is housing. With house-sitting, I bypass that concern, lining up sits to minimize hotel costs. This lifestyle has radically transformed my existence, granting me both financial and emotional freedom.

Staying in real homes for extended periods has given me the chance to explore local neighborhoods intimately, rather than fleetingly as a tourist.

Furthermore, I’ve met incredible homeowners worldwide, who have been exceptionally generous, ensuring I feel right at home. These relationships enrich my experience, as I care for their homes and pets as if they were my own.

Facing Challenges

Of course, this lifestyle isn’t without challenges. I live out of a suitcase, often unsure of where my next destination will be. Planning is a constant; there are instances when I’m booked months ahead, while other times, I scramble for arrangements just days before a move, or deal with unexpected cancellations.

This uncertainty can be stressful, but for me, the freedom and adventure outweigh the anxiety. Nowadays, I juggle remote work alongside various house-sitting opportunities, and I’m unsure when I might settle down again.

The Road Ahead

For now, this vibrant lifestyle fulfills my thirst for exploration and connection. I have a long list of cities I dream of visiting, both domestically and abroad. Whether I explore them through house-sitting or another means, one thing is for certain: I’m not slowing down anytime soon.

Do you share my sense of adventure? How might you explore the world?
