Essential Information for Pet Owners Traveling to Mexico Due to Screwworm Risks

Pet owners can now travel with their dogs from the U.S. to Mexico again after federal officials reversed a temporary restriction related to the New World screwworm. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s APHIS clarified that standard travel procedures for pet dogs remain in place, despite earlier confusion.

Requirements for bringing dogs back into the U.S. from Mexico still exist, including a screwworm freedom certification from an authorized veterinarian. This certification ensures that the dog was inspected and free of the parasite before travel. These rules have been in place since November 2024.

Concerns surrounding pet travel have been particularly prevalent among residents of border communities, many of whom frequently cross into Mexico for veterinary care. For instance, Gloria Gonzalez, a pet owner who regularly crosses the border for spay and neuter procedures, highlighted the affordability of care in Mexico.

Veterinarians are advising pet owners to monitor their animals for wounds that could attract screwworm flies, urging prompt treatment as needed. However, confusion over required documentation persists, and veterinarians hope for clearer guidance from authorities.

In response to the situation, Mexican animal health officials have increased inspections of pets at entry points. Pet owners are encouraged to check the latest travel requirements from USDA APHIS before heading across the border.
