Vaccinations and Medication Requirements When Traveling with a Pet
To travel with your pet, a rabies vaccination is legally required. Ferrets, cats, and dogs traveling by plane, train, or ferry must meet the following criteria:
-
Booster Vaccinations: Ensure all vaccinations, including boosters, are current and administered before their expiration date as indicated by your vet. Proof of vaccination is necessary on your Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or European Health Certificate (EHC).
-
Tapeworm Treatment: For specific destinations, such as Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway, and Northern Ireland, dogs need a vet-administered tapeworm treatment within 24 to 120 hours before entry. This treatment must contain praziquantel (or an equivalent) and be documented on your pet’s travel papers.
Entry Requirements for the UK When Traveling with a Pet
Pet Travel Essentials – Tapeworm Treatment:
When re-entering the UK, most dogs must have tapeworm treatment administered between 24–120 hours prior to arrival, unless they are returning directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, or Norway. For instance, if traveling to Spain or France, your dog will need treatment only for the return journey.
Pet Travel Essentials – Rabies Test:
For pets traveling from non-EU or “unlisted” countries, a rabies blood test (titer) may be required. This test must be taken at least 30 days after vaccination and 3 calendar months before travel. Requirements vary, so it’s crucial to consult the UK government’s pet travel website.
Ensure you enter the UK through designated entry points, regardless of the country of departure.
Northern Ireland Specific Rules for Pet Travel
Northern Ireland adheres to EU pet travel rules, so traveling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland requires:
- Your pet must be microchipped and vaccinated for rabies (with a 21-day waiting period post-vaccination).
- Tapeworm treatment is mandatory for dogs within 24–120 hours before travel.
- Entry must be through a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry (TPE) in Northern Ireland.
Pet Travel Essentials – NI Pet Travel Scheme:
Starting from June 4, 2025, a new NI Pet Travel Scheme allows for an Animal Health Certificate only if traveling onward to the EU. Residents of Great Britain can utilize a free NI Pet Travel Document for stays within Northern Ireland.
When returning to Great Britain from Northern Ireland, this is considered domestic travel, so no AHC, health certificate, or additional checks are required.
You can apply for a Northern Ireland pet travel document online, which remains valid as long as you own the pet.
