The government is launching a new initiative called ‘Great British Summer Savings’ to support families dealing with the cost of living. Throughout August, children aged 5 to 15 in England will benefit from free bus travel, funded by over £100 million committed by the Chancellor. This initiative allows unlimited journeys on participating local buses without any registration requirements, making it easier for families to enjoy summer activities.
Concurrently, the government is introducing targeted cuts to agri-food tariffs on products like biscuits and chocolate to alleviate food price pressures. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the government’s commitment to easing household budget strains and supporting families during school holidays. The scheme follows a successful pilot last summer in the West of England, which saw significant public transport usage.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander noted that this initiative helps parents plan outings without financial stress, while various stakeholders expressed support, highlighting its potential to increase public transport use and support low-income families. The government aims to enhance public transport by investing in local services and ensuring affordability during this period.
The overall aim of these measures is to protect households and businesses from rising costs, foster community connection, and encourage the next generation to regularly utilize public transportation.
