This morning, as I navigated the new Google+/YouTube platform, I stumbled upon an article from Cosmopolitan magazine featuring Robyn Lawley, a model who has ventured into the swimwear industry with her own collection this year. Before reading the article, I was unfamiliar with Robyn, but after viewing her images, I was struck by the fact that I would not personally classify her as a “plus-size” model.
While I have a fondness for Cosmo, which I enjoy reading, it’s important to note that the magazine does not dictate modeling standards; that responsibility falls to the fashion industry. The piece describes Robyn’s physique as that of a “real woman,” highlighting her natural beauty and emphasizing that her images require no retouching—something I wholeheartedly agree with.
However, it raises a troubling question: if women with average, healthy bodies are considered “plus-sized,” what label does the fashion industry reserve for those of us who are even more curvy and voluptuous?
Happy Saturday.
