Researchers Identify Gut Signal That Suppresses Sugar Cravings

Scientists have recently uncovered a hidden communication system between the gut and the brain that plays a crucial role in regulating food cravings based on nutritional needs. This discovery, led by a team from the Institute for Basic Science, reveals that the gut actively monitors nutrient levels, particularly protein, and communicates this information to the brain to influence dietary choices.

  1. Gut-Brain Communication: The gut not only digests food but also detects protein shortages and alters cravings through a combination of nerve signals and hormonal responses.

  2. Protein Detection Mechanism: When protein levels are low, the gut activates two signaling pathways:

    • A fast neural pathway alerts the brain quickly about amino acid deficiencies.
    • A slower hormonal pathway facilitates sustained protein-seeking behavior.
  3. Role of Hormones: In fruit flies, a peptide hormone called CNMa is released in response to protein deprivation. It activates gut neurons that send signals to the brain, encouraging protein intake while reducing the desire for carbohydrates.

  4. Impact of Gut Microbiome: The study indicates that gut bacteria can influence nutrient availability and the signaling pathways controlling cravings. Flies without their normal gut bacteria showed increased activation of brain neurons responsible for amino acid seeking.

  5. Implications for Mammals: Similar mechanisms were observed in mice, suggesting that this nutrient-sensing system has evolutionary significance. Evidence shows that even without the hormone FGF21, mice still sought essential proteins.
