In recent years, Australian consumers have been making a remarkable shift in their beverage choices. A comprehensive 28-year study reveals a growing preference for water and low- or no-sugar options, signaling a significant change in the market.

The research, conducted by FOODiQ Global and published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients, investigated Australian sales of non-alcoholic, water-based beverages between 1997 and 2024. Commissioned by the Australian Beverages Council, this study is recognized as the longest-running analysis of its type globally.

Key Findings

The data indicated that sugar-sweetened water-based beverages comprised 70 percent of the category in 1997, dropping to 35 percent by 2024. In contrast, the market share for low- and no-sugar varieties surged from 30 percent to 65 percent during the same timeframe.

Still and sparkling water demonstrated the most significant growth, increasing its market share from 4.8 percent to 36 percent over the 28 years. By 2024, water had surpassed sugar-sweetened carbonated soft drinks, which held only a 23 percent market share.

The analysis also revealed a 54 percent reduction in the sugar content of water-based drinks since 1997, including a 31 percent drop in the sugar content of carbonated soft drinks.
