Shawn Levy’s New Project: A Look at “Star Wars: Starfighter”
Director Shawn Levy has recently completed filming and is now in the post-production stage for the highly anticipated “Star Wars: Starfighter.”
This exciting addition to the franchise features an all-star cast, including Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre, but moviegoers will have to wait until May 28, 2027, to see it on the big screen.
“I’m in the beautiful sanctity of the edit room,” Levy shared during the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony on Saturday. “We’re in a unique position where we don’t have a release date looming over us. I can focus entirely on shaping the film in this quiet, creative space.”
From his comments, it seems that artificial intelligence (AI) will not play a major role in shaping the film. Levy stated, “To date, I haven’t integrated AI in any significant way into my storytelling process. However, I am confident we will see its integration in my career as it evolves.”
As a prolific director and producer, Levy’s impressive portfolio includes hits like “Stranger Things,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “All the Light We Cannot See,” and “The Adam Project.”
“Many smarter individuals than I have pointed out that we must responsibly integrate these technologies while maintaining the importance of the creative voice,” he explained. “The unique vision and creativity from creators are one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable. If we can harness AI to support storytelling within a human-first framework, then it’s something to be embraced.”
Levy emphasized the importance of regulation, stating, “I dedicate part of my day to understanding the regulatory landscape surrounding AI. Acknowledging its imminent role—both in filmmaking and beyond—is essential; ignoring it would be naive.”
In a separate interview at the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman conveyed optimism, suggesting that AI will ultimately benefit Hollywood more than it harms the industry. Critics fear the technology will lead to job losses and illegal use of intellectual property.
“People genuinely care about the creators behind the stories and art that resonate,” he asserted. “I believe that the trend will shift towards increased appreciation for human creators rather than less.”

Conclusion
With “Star Wars: Starfighter,” Shawn Levy embarks on an exciting journey in the Star Wars universe, and his approach to filmmaking emphasizes a balance between creativity and technology. As the industry navigates the complexities of AI, both Levy and Altman highlight the enduring value of the human touch in storytelling and the ways in which technology can enhance—not replace—the artistic process.
