WEIRTON — Exciting developments are underway to enhance fitness opportunities in the community, particularly in one of Weirton’s primary parks.

After months of discussions and planning, the Weirton Parks Board is poised to establish an outdoor fitness court in the previously occupied sand volleyball area at Marland Heights Park.

“It’s a flat area,” shared Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle. “It’s essentially the only viable space we have left.”

This initiative first emerged last fall, with the Weirton Council approving a resolution in October to allocate funds for the outdoor fitness court as part of the 2026 National Fitness Campaign.

The city has applied for a $30,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign, supplemented by a local contribution of $145,000.

While specific designs for the fitness court have not yet been released, the National Fitness Campaign’s fitness courts are intended to facilitate a comprehensive full-body workout in just seven minutes, all available for free in the open air.

The fitness court features seven distinct exercise zones that target various activities, including squats, core strengthening, push and pull exercises, lunges, and agility workouts. This setup allows users to engage in circuit training through clearly defined stations.

Additionally, the National Fitness Campaign Fitness Court integrates a smartphone application that connects users to a network of fitness courts and training resources.

Notably, these courts often incorporate elements of public art, enhancing the aesthetic and communal atmosphere of the area.

Shingle anticipates that the fitness court will see significant usage during early mornings and late afternoons.

“This amenity will undoubtedly attract more visitors to the park,” Shingle noted.

The National Fitness Campaign has an ambitious goal of establishing 5,000 free outdoor fitness courts by 2030, ensuring that every American has access to a fitness space within a 10-minute bike ride.

Shingle also highlighted that this isn’t the first collaboration between Weirton and the National Fitness Campaign; their partnership dates back to 1971 with the installation of a walking trail at Starvaggi Memorial Park, an early initiative in community fitness.

The Fitness Court program officially launched in 1979, paving the way for enhanced health resources in communities across the country.

### Conclusion
The planned outdoor fitness court in Marland Heights Park represents a significant step toward promoting physical activity and well-being in the Weirton community. The integration of diverse exercise zones and a connection to a broader fitness network illustrates a commitment to improving public health resources. As the project unfolds, it will undoubtedly provide a vibrant space for residents to engage in fitness and foster a sense of community. Embrace this opportunity to get outside, get fit, and enjoy all that your local park has to offer!
