Intense El Niño May Lead to a Lively Winter Season

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Last winter saw minimal rain and mountain snow, but this winter may be more active if the strong El Niño continues to build.

Clifford Mass, a professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Washington, notes there are no certainties with El Niño. For instance, in the winter of 2023-2024, southern Nevada experienced significant rain and mountain snow; however, during the very strong El Niño of 2015-2016, both were below normal.

According to Mass, “This kind of pattern should bring enhanced precipitation to southern California and southern Nevada.” He anticipates that the El Niño will strengthen through fall but weaken during winter. The scientific community acknowledges the concept of a super El Niño, categorizing it as a regular, strong, or very strong event.
