Discover Your True Strength with ‘Strengthspan’ – Uncover What You Might Be Missing

Defining Strength: A Comprehensive View

Strength is a multi-faceted concept that goes beyond the traditional notion of lifting heavyweight. While some view strength solely through the lens of powerlifting, others approach it through various dimensions, emphasizing a well-rounded fitness experience. It’s important to recognize that strength manifests in different forms and can be developed through a multitude of activities.

Consider the journey of Andy Speer, C.S.C.S.. With a diverse background as a gymnast, track athlete, fitness model, and Peloton instructor, Speer exemplifies a holistic approach to strength training. His experiences highlight that strength training can take many forms and still be effective.

Speer collaborated with MH US fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. and exercise physiologist Dr. Pat Davidson on MH’s Strong Talk, where they explored the various dimensions of strength. They introduced the concept of the “Strengthspan,” which encompasses different categories of strength, including Absolute Strength, Aesthetic Strength, Aerobic Strength, and others. This multifaceted perspective allows individuals to focus on what matters most to them in their fitness journeys.

Viewing Strength Through a Diverse Lens

EBENEZER SAMUEL: Do you think we view strength too narrowly?

ANDY SPEER: Many people do see strength from their own limited perspective, shaped by their personal priorities and life stages. These priorities can change over time, adding depth to how we view fitness.

ES: That limited perspective often leads to limited training styles, correct?

AS: Absolutely! I consider myself a generalist who has dipped into various training styles— from Olympic lifting to physique competitions. While I’ve not always been the top competitor, my versatility in various activities has paid off, enabling me to perform well across the board.

Defining Absolute Strength: Is There a Limit?

ES: When considering absolute strength, how much is necessary? At what point do we see diminishing returns?

PAT DAVIDSON: A straightforward way to gauge strength is the “2-3-4” metric. If you can bench press two plates, squat three, and deadlift four plates, you’re in a strong category. There’s certainly room to push beyond that, but hitting these benchmarks indicates a solid foundation of strength.

AS: That’s a fair assessment. However, as I grow older and shift focus toward various activities, I see the value in maintaining a threshold strength without excessive volume. I engage in higher-intensity work while being strategic about my training volume.

ES: While the 2-3-4 system is useful, I advocate for a more nuanced view. Ideally, one should be able to bench press their body weight, squat one and a half times their weight, and deadlift one and a half times as well.

Balancing Muscle, Cardio, and Longevity

ES: Is there a limit to how much muscle one should gain while maintaining aerobic fitness?

PD: That largely depends on personal goals and body type.

AS: Exactly. Your goals dictate your approach. If I aim for aesthetic goals, I have specific targets to meet.

ES: How does this relate to longevity?

AS: Performance often contrasts with longevity. What enhances performance can sometimes be detrimental to long-term health.

PD: It’s a delicate balance. Achieving elite performance doesn’t always equate to health, as different sports impose varying demands on the body.

Conclusion

Understanding strength is essential for anyone looking to enhance their fitness journey. Instead of adhering to a single-dimensional view, consider the various forms of strength and how they can enrich your training. Whether your passion is powerlifting, agility workouts, or a mix of styles, embracing a balanced approach can lead you to greater achievements and a more fulfilling fitness experience. Remember, strength comes in many forms, and the right approach for you is the one that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.
