Key Takeaways from ZDNET

  • AI tagging transformed my chaotic bookmarks into a searchable archive.
  • Karakeep effectively organizes YouTube videos by topic.
  • A homelab server supports my knowledge library, with an option for cloud hosting.

Experiencing overwhelming browser tabs is a common challenge for many. I recently inquired with ChatGPT about any known conditions related to having too many tabs open. Its humorous output included terms such as “Tabulomania” and “Cognitive Tab Retention Disorder” (CTRD).

Regardless of the label, did you know that there’s a solution? In this article, I will share my findings on an effective remedy.

Discovering Karakeep

Although I was frustrated by the shutdown of Pocket, I discovered a superior and more manageable solution called Karakeep. This innovative tool, previously known as Hoarder, has proven to be invaluable for users like me.

If you find yourself battling with too many open tabs, the AI features of Karakeep might offer the assistance you need. It utilizes AI to generate keywords and summaries, functioning impressively well.

Karakeep can be utilized either through cloud hosting or on your own server. The cloud version is simpler to set up and allows up to 10 bookmarks for free, although advanced features require signing up for the $4-per-month Pro plan. This premium option accommodates up to 50,000 articles and offers 50GB of storage.

A demo version can be accessed without signing up. Visit this link and log in using demo@karakeep.app with the password demodemo. This read-only demo features sample data to familiarize you with the platform.

After experiencing the loss of all my saved Pocket content due to cloud service issues, I opted to self-host Karakeep on my server. It can be deployed as a Docker container on any system running Docker, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. The self-hosted version is free and open-source, although you will need to pay for AI features from your preferred AI provider.

My setup occurred on an old Mac mini, which now functions as a Linux-based homelab Docker server. If you’re unfamiliar with Docker or how to install Linux, there are resources available on ZDNET to guide you.

Docker operates as a container service, streamlining applications without needing to emulate an entire operating system. Much like virtual machines, Docker containers run effortlessly across various platforms. I’ve had no performance issues running both Docker and Karakeep on my 2012 Intel Mac mini.

Basic Bookmarking and Archiving

At its core, Karakeep enables you to save links to webpages for future reference. However, it can be customized to archive screenshots, PDFs, and full text of pages, safeguarding against link rot.

You can save pages directly by entering URLs, but using the Karakeep Chrome extension is far more convenient. Just click the extension icon to save the desired page.

The Chrome extension indicates a page has been saved using the “Hoarded!” label—though that’s just a quirk.

After saving a page, you can view your archive, where snapshots of the articles appear. Clicking the double-arrow expands the article, allowing you to read, add notes, edit keywords, and utilize AI for summaries.

Saved articles can be organized into lists, searched using familiar tools, and archived once done. Archiving retains article information while moving it off the main home screen.

AI Setup and Cost

Karakeep integrates with various AI services. Setup details are outlined here. For self-hosted versions, configuration files need adjustments, and an API key from your AI provider is required.

AI functionality is included in the cloud version of Karakeep, necessitating an API key as well.

Currently, I use OpenAI via its API, which adds to my $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus subscription. To illustrate the costs, I have around 25,000 items indexed with Karakeep. Transitioning articles from Pocket to Karakeep took two months, as each article had to be rescanned and AI-generated keywords assigned, costing approximately $40.

I utilize Karakeep’s AI keyword service daily for about five to ten articles, and I haven’t incurred additional charges for seven months. According to estimates in the Karakeep documentation, 3,000 articles can be tagged for about one dollar, aligning with my experience.

A quick note on importing: although I was able to save URLs from Pocket, I had to segment them into batches of 500 during the import process. Rebuilding my archive was tedious but worth it, as every article automatically received keyword tags from AI.

YouTube Decluttering

I confess—I have a habit of saving countless YouTube videos as browser tabs. YouTube, in my opinion, is truly incredible, and I often save videos for later viewing.

However, keeping so many tabs open creates an overwhelming browsing experience. Karakeep allows me to manage these videos more effectively by utilizing rules and lists.

Preference for thumbnail visuals influences my viewing choices, so Karakeep retains video thumbnails. By setting the image options to fit, I can see the full original thumbnails from YouTube, though viewing times remain untracked.

I created a dedicated list for YouTube to keep saved videos separate from articles. Within that list, I set up sublists focusing on different topics such as AI, 3D printing, and woodworking, which helps keep my saved content organized.

Then, using the Rule Engine within Karakeep, I established a primary YouTube rule to manage my bookmarks. This rule activates every time a bookmark is added, specifically targeting YouTube URLs.

The rule adds any YouTube bookmark to the designated YouTube list while archiving it to keep the main list clean.

Each topic sublist functions similarly, allowing me to automatically sort my content. While assigning tags may take a moment, this organization greatly enhances my experience.

Embracing AI Assistance

While the focus of many AI stories typically centers on AI as the main attraction, my approach in this instance emphasizes its role in enhancing organization and efficiency.

AI significantly streamlines the organization and discovery of archived content, allowing me to generate keywords and simplify content retrieval. By marrying traditional organizational strategies with AI capabilities, I can catalog videos with mere clicks.

Looking ahead, I encourage everyone to identify additional scenarios where AI can play a supporting role instead of stealing the spotlight. My experience revitalized an outdated computer, transforming it into a productive resource by integrating Docker, Linux, and cost-effective AI options.
