The shift back to office attire from pandemic-era casual wear has left many employees, especially Gen Z, uncertain about appropriate work fashion. A survey reveals that 78% of workers, particularly 94% of Gen Z, are actively seeking guidance on what to wear. This confusion may stem from a lack of experience in traditional office settings, with many young workers having started their careers working from home.
Diana Tsui, a stylist, notes that this generation is likely to have the most questions about professional attire due to their limited experience. Moreover, the blending of casual and corporate styles, especially post-COVID-19, has made it challenging for all age groups to navigate workwear conventions. Anxiety about dressing appropriately is prevalent, with staffers experiencing such stress several times a month.
To overcome this challenge, especially for Gen Z, Tsui offers three key tips:
- Observe Superiors: Look at how more experienced colleagues dress to gauge the expected attire.
- Express Yourself Within Limits: Add personality to outfits with unique accessories while adhering to conservative standards.
- Avoid Excessive Skin Exposure: Opt for clothing that maintains professionalism and decorum.
The pandemic has fundamentally changed workplace attire norms, necessitating clear communication from employers about dress codes. With multiple generations now finding themselves in the same office, differences in style can create confusion. That said, some trends are solidifying: sneakers are becoming more acceptable while formal items like ties and high heels are declining.
To alleviate stress about outfit choices, adopting a standardized “work uniform” may provide younger employees a sense of control and certainty about their appearance, giving them one less thing to worry about in navigating their careers.
