On Monday, Stripe unveiled a preview of a new feature designed to assist AI startups and other businesses in effectively managing the costs associated with AI model usage for their customers.
This innovative feature not only facilitates the straightforward transfer of token costs but allows startups to apply a markup on these expenses. For example, a company may automatically add a 30% markup to the cost of tokens that it incurs from the model provider.
As Stripe puts it, “If you are developing an AI application, you’ll want to ensure a steady 30% margin over the base LLM token costs from various providers. Our billing system takes care of this automatically.”
With this billing functionality, startups can select the AI models they wish to implement. The system monitors the API pricing for these models and systematically records customer token usage while incorporating the markup needed for profit.
As previously reported, AI startups employ various pricing strategies for their services. A common approach involves tiered monthly subscriptions with limits on usage; exceeding these limits usually results in additional charges for the subscriber.
Last year, for instance, Cursor modified its pricing structure, transitioning from unrestricted access to limited usage, with extra fees for additional consumption.
In the absence of a usage cap, users could potentially accumulate hefty bills for a startup and push that business into the red. This is particularly relevant for agentic startups. The more frequently customers utilize their agents, the greater the token consumption from providers such as OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, and others, which intensifies the importance of sound pricing and business model decisions.

Additionally, Stripe has launched its own AI gateway, providing users with access to a variety of models, allowing them to select the most suitable one for their needs. Furthermore, the billing feature is compatible with popular third-party gateways such as those from Vercel and OpenRouter, as noted in a tweet by a Stripe product manager.
Other startups are also working to provide AI model cost management solutions, many of which include their own gateways. For example, OpenRouter offers access to over 300 models, imposing a flat 5.5% markup over token fees for its introductory plan while also providing budget controls.
While Stripe currently does not implement its own markup on the gateway, as stated by its product manager on X, this feature remains in waitlist mode. Nevertheless, if Stripe can successfully simplify the tracking and billing process for these expenses, it could significantly impact the industry. As of now, Stripe has not disclosed when this feature will be widely available.
