Significant Enhancements to Fitness Facilities

In 2026, the gyms at NSA Naples will benefit from over $500,000 in upgrades, including new treadmills and other fitness equipment aimed at enriching sailors’ physical fitness and overall wellness. These improvements include the establishment of four outdoor “pop-up” gyms and two new dedicated training zones in fitness centers.

According to Captain John Randazzo, base commander, these upgrades are crucial for ensuring that sailors have access to the tools necessary to maintain both physical and mental readiness.

In alignment with a broader initiative, the Department of Defense is reviewing standards related to physical fitness and will soon require active-duty sailors to pass two physical fitness assessments each year starting in 2026. This brings a return to more rigorous standards that existed before the pandemic.

Outdoor Fit Boxes: A Unique Approach to Training

This summer, NSA Naples introduced “fit boxes,” which are transformed cargo containers outfitted with a variety of fitness equipment including barbells, weights, sleds, kettlebells, climbing ropes, and pull-up bars. These outdoor facilities complement the indoor enhancements and provide sailors with diverse training options.

Tailored Training and Nutrition Zones

Additionally, two specialized training and nutrition zones have been integrated into the fitness centers, featuring squat racks, deadlift platforms, and other equipment tailored to meet the demands of the Navy’s fitness assessments. While these upgrades cost $157,000 and $267,000 respectively, they represent a meaningful investment in the fitness and well-being of military personnel.

Moreover, $120,000 is allocated for acquiring more treadmills, cross-trainers, approved fitness bikes, and sled mills this year, further enhancing workout options for sailors.

Embracing Digital Fitness Solutions

Beyond physical equipment, NSA Naples offers an innovative digital platform that features virtual classes such as spin, yoga, and Zumba, available around the clock. This flexibility allows sailors to take charge of their fitness journeys and integrate healthy routines into their daily lives, even outside standard gym hours.
