New World Screwworm in Arizona: Increased Requirements for Traveling Pets

As Arizona sees a rise in New World Screwworm cases, new travel regulations for pets are being introduced. The Arizona Department of Agriculture confirmed five cases, including a recent one in Graham County.

Travel Requirements:
Starting immediately, anyone traveling with pets from Arizona to California must provide:

  • An electronic Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) from an accredited veterinarian (paper forms not accepted).
  • A statement on the CVI confirming no evidence of infestation.
  • An entry permit, which must be obtained before leaving the origin premises.
  • A negative EIA test for all equids.
  • Arrival in California within 7 days of inspection.

Animals from infested zones in southeastern Arizona will have additional requirements.

Officials stress the importance of inspecting animals for signs of infestation, as severe cases can be deadly. The USDA is involved in these guidelines, with Florida having even stricter regulations.

The USDA recently awarded a $3.74 million grant to the University of Arizona to bolster defenses against the screwworm threat.

For those caring for animals in Arizona, close monitoring for infestations is critical to prevent widespread issues.
