Southcoast Health Launches Advanced Cardiac PET/CT Program in Fairhaven
Fairhaven, MA – Southcoast Health has launched a new Cardiac PET/CT program at 208 Mill Road, enhancing access to state-of-the-art imaging technology for cardiac patients.
A cardiac PET/CT scan is one of the most accurate noninvasive methods for evaluating blood flow to the heart, simplifying the diagnosis of significant heart issues. This program allows patients who cannot undergo traditional treadmill heart stress tests to receive specialized care locally.
“Launching this program shows Southcoast Health’s commitment to delivering expert clinical care within the community,” said Dr. M. Wajid Baig, Medical Director of Nuclear Cardiology. “This technology, previously available only at major hospitals, enables comprehensive diagnostic cardiac imaging and treatment in one place.”
The advanced imaging assesses coronary artery disease (CAD), chest pain, previous heart attacks, heart failure, and more. In addition to identifying blockages through myocardial perfusion imaging, the technology also measures blood supply in coronary arteries.
Dr. Carolyn Davidson, a cardiologist, emphasized the importance of this technology in diagnosing microvascular disease, particularly common in women. “With this advanced imaging, we can quickly address smaller blockages that might have remained undetected,” she noted.
The Southcoast Health Imaging team collaborates closely with patients’ care teams to ensure comfort and accurate test results. Debra A. Desmarais, Executive Director of Radiology Imaging Services, expressed pride in the team’s collaboration and dedication to patient care.
Compared to traditional nuclear medicine cardiac exams, PET/CT scans use significantly less radiation, making them safer for younger patients and those needing multiple scans. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes, minimizing the time spent in the hospital.
