Woman Attempts to Pet Great White Shark, With Unfortunate Results (Video)

A woman on a shark-tagging expedition off Tybee Island, Georgia, attempted to pet a great white shark, treating it like a dog. In a viral video, as she reached out to the shark swimming alongside the boat, it suddenly lunged at her, prompting her to retract her hand. Thankfully, she was unharmed.

The woman, known as Jen, was part of a nonprofit initiative called Knot Lucky, which assists military veterans and their families while also helping researchers tag sharks. Program founder Jimmy Armel noted the calm before the shark’s reaction, emphasizing the crew’s control over the situation and confirming that Jen was never in real danger. They did not tag the shark as it wasn’t safe to do so.

Despite the lack of injuries, experts caution against unnecessary interactions with wild sharks. Researcher Chris Pepin-Neff from the University of Sydney condemned the idea of petting sharks, pointing out that it stresses the animals and sends the wrong message to the public.

Both this incident and a recent spate of shark bites in Australia serve as important reminders to respect wildlife and maintain a safe distance from unpredictable animals.
