Animal Shelter in Salem Evacuates Dogs Due to Hurricane Isaias

A shelter in Salem, Massachusetts, has welcomed 33 dogs evacuated from Alabama in response to Hurricane Isaias. The MSPCA-Angell’s Northeast Animal Shelter coordinated an emergency transport to protect these animals from storm-related threats such as flooding and power outages.

Collaborative Effort

The rescue was made possible through a network of organizations, including the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, which has been actively evacuating pets from high-risk areas. The BISSELL Pet Foundation oversaw the logistics of transporting the dogs north.

Impact and Next Steps

Bringing in these dogs helps Alabama shelters create capacity for pets displaced by the hurricane. The newly arrived dogs will undergo a 48-hour quarantine and receive necessary medical care before becoming available for adoption.

The shelter is seeking donations to support the care of these animals during this critical time.

Updates on Hurricane Isaias

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday night as a Category 2 storm and has since weakened to a post-tropical cyclone. The hurricane has caused fatalities and significant evacuations across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia, and is expected to bring severe weather, including strong winds and flash floods, to the Southeast through Sunday.
