Space-Saving Appliances Rise in Popularity Amid Skyrocketing Home Prices

In Japan, compact appliances that optimize limited living spaces are increasingly popular due to rising housing prices, particularly in urban areas. This trend, known as “supepa” (short for “space performance”), is prompting manufacturers to design products that efficiently utilize space without sacrificing comfort or functionality.

For instance, Panasonic’s SD series washer-dryer is only 60 cm wide and 65 cm deep yet accommodates a 10 kg washing capacity, thanks to an innovative internal design. Since its launch in January last year, sales have exceeded projections by 30%.

Additionally, Iris Ohyama’s IRSD-17A refrigerator-freezer is just 44 cm wide but features a tall design with a 120-liter refrigerator compartment and a 50-liter freezer.

As of early 2026, the average cost of newly built condominiums in the Tokyo metropolitan area hit a record 101.35 million yen ($640,000), climbing 13.1% from the prior year.

To maximize storage, companies are also creating products that integrate seamlessly into home decor, like Sharp’s EC-CR1 cordless stick vacuum cleaner, released in August, featuring a sleek design that complements interior aesthetics.
