What Causes High Energy Costs in Florida?

The interview discusses the rising energy bills in Florida, which have increased by as much as 70% over the past decade. Jessica Meszaros, a climate and environment reporter at WUSF, attributes this spike to consecutive rate hikes by utility companies and high profits for those companies. Florida’s investor-owned utilities earned over $6 billion last year, prompting calls for profit caps from consumer advocates.

Alternatives to the for-profit model, such as municipal utilities, have been proposed but faced obstacles, such as legal challenges and high transition costs. The Florida Public Service Commission, tasked with approving rate hikes, has been criticized for its lax oversight.

Communities are responding by voicing their grievances at local meetings, and rising energy costs have become a topic in upcoming elections, with notable lobbying efforts by utility companies. Although solar energy is being explored, the current reliance on natural gas for grid stabilization raises concerns about increasing costs rather than reducing them.
