Second passenger freed from custody at Logan following flight diversion

Immigrant Detained at Logan Airport After Flight Diversion

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — A second Massachusetts man has been released from immigration custody at Logan Airport following a complicated travel incident.

Carlos Maldonado Valle, 21, a Provincetown resident and Community Service Officer with the Provincetown Police Department, was held for nearly two days, as confirmed by his attorney, Rachel Self.

The flight from Puerto Rico to Boston on Monday was diverted to Bermuda due to a medical emergency. Passengers were removed from the plane and taken to a hotel before returning to the Bermuda airport early Tuesday.

Upon arrival back in Boston, passengers faced additional delays as they could not deboard the plane for hours. The situation escalated when they were required to go through customs, despite many lacking passports.

Two passengers, including Maldonado Valle and Daury Baez Seri, a DACA recipient originally from the Dominican Republic, were detained by immigration officials.

Provincetown Town Manager Alex Morse praised Maldonado Valle, stating, “He is a hardworking, compassionate, and selfless young man who dreams of becoming a police officer.”

On Wednesday, it was reported that Baez Seri had also been released after spending over 24 hours in custody.

NewsCenter 5 previously contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection regarding the incident but did not receive an immediate response.
