SAESA endorses a 4,600 MW battery storage initiative and advocates for cohesive energy strategy development.

The South African Energy Storage Association (SAESA) has expressed strong support for the prioritization of 4,600 MW of battery energy storage as part of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2025. This decision marks a significant shift in South Africa’s energy planning, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that considers not just the generation capacity but also factors such as energy availability, storage, and grid constraints.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are recognized as vital infrastructure, enhancing flexibility, minimizing curtailment, and bolstering energy security. SAESA urges that storage, flexibility, and system services be incorporated into the core of South Africa’s future electricity strategy.

The association will also participate in the C&I Energy + Storage Summit on October 28-29, 2026, at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg. This event aims to gather commercial and industrial energy stakeholders to discuss energy security and storage deployment strategies. Attendees can apply to join the Hosted Buyer Programme for complimentary access to networking opportunities with industry leaders.
