The Greater Paulsboro Energy Companies (GPEC) are vital to the economy of Gloucester County, generating approximately $814 million in total economic output and supporting 2,855 jobs, according to a recent study from the Steve Sweeney Center for Public Policy at Rowan University. The GPEC facilities, including the Paulsboro Refining Company and ExxonMobil Lubes Plant, are strategic for the region, significantly contributing to local tax revenue—around $22.6 million—which funds essential services like public schools and emergency services.
Steve Sweeney, the Gloucester County Administrator, emphasized the importance of these energy companies as economic anchors that provide high-paying, stable jobs and bolster local property taxes. The GPEC supports about one-third of the local economy in its operational areas and accounts for roughly 16.5% of jobs across Paulsboro, Greenwich, and West Deptford.
The study highlighted that GPEC has contributed $265.9 million in labor income and $437.8 million in added value to New Jersey’s economy. Investments exceeding $53.8 million have been made in capital projects, enhancing facilities and operations to ensure safe and environmentally responsible practices.
Leadership from Rowan University praised GPEC’s role in advancing workforce development and innovation. As key players in the industry, GPEC companies are deemed essential in navigating today’s energy challenges, with a focus on long-term sustainability and community support.
